Butler Freeport Trail at Buffalo Creek Nature Park

An Accessible Birding Location in Butler County

Location: The Butler Freeport Trail is a mostly flat path that travels from Butler, PA to Freeport, PA. There are many stops and trailheads along the way. We are focusing on the Monroe Trailhead which is near Buffalo Creek Nature Park.  The nature park is located at 154 Monroe Road, Sarver, PA. The trail is located just up the hill from the nature park. There are a few parking spaces available at the trailhead and several more available at the nature park.

Facilities:  The Butler Freeport Trail has porta potties located along the route, however there are modern restroom facilities available to trail users at the Buffalo Creek Nature Park. Those restrooms are accessible anytime the building is open. It's run by Audubon Society of Western PA. See their open hours here:  Buffalo Creek Nature Park - Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania

Likely Birds: The Butler Freeport trail runs through a variety of habitat, including wooded forest and scrubland.  This area of the trail has water features close by including Little Buffalo Creek. Belted Kingfishers, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Hooded Mergansers have been spotted near the water.  The wooded area along the trail is great for warblers in the springtime. Yellow-throated Warblers, Northern Parulas, and Black-throated Green Warblers have all been spotted.
